Up for a Challenge?

We certainly hope so! It’s for a very worthy cause, so why not? The challenge will be to complete the 26 mile / 42km world famous Great Western Greenway - a picturesque off-road walk/cycle trail which traverses Ireland’s idyllic Atlantic coast. The traffic-free greenway follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway, or so-called “Balfour Lines” which connected the western region between 1894 and 1937.

So why not get away for the day and take in the beauty of the West coast? You’ll experience dramatic views of Clew Bay, spectacular mountain ranges and pass through quaint, picturesque villages along the way. It’s all taking place on March 18th 2012. Think you’re up for the challenge? If so....

We will depart from Achill Sound on March 18th at 7:00am, pass through Mulranny & Newport and finish up in Westport. Distance of the route is 42k (26 miles), but don’t worry, we’ll be stopping for a few well earned breaks along the way. The first section from Achill to Mulranny is 13km (approx. 2.5 hours walk). The middle section from Mulranny to Newport is 18km (3.5 hours) and the final section from Newport to Westport is a distance of 12km (2.5 hours). For more detailed information on the route simply visit www.greenway.ie. We all know walking can be exhausting, but fear not....Bike Hire will be available in each town along the route, with drop-off and collection services also - so you’ve no excuse! We would advise you however to arrange this in advance of the challenge, as bike rental may be quite popular on the day.

As we’re starting in Achill, Buses will depart from Castlebar at 5:30am + Westport at 6:00am on the morning of the event and will also return from the route end at 5:00pm. Travel cost will be €10 return. So if you’d like to avail of this bus service we would advise you to book your seat early by calling 087 233 0097, as places will be limited.

There’ll be many breaks along the way and although you can choose to grab lunch/dinner in Mulranny or Newport, we would advise you all to bring along a packed lunch as well (water stops will be provided on route). We will have a small Marquee at the end point where you can all enjoy a hot cuppa and some light refreshments. Hi-vis jackets will be available at the staring point and we would advise everyone to wear one as the greenway route exits onto the main road at 2 short points - and we want to ensure you’ll be seen by on-coming traffic. But don’t worry, the only other traffic on the day will be cyclists! It’s also important that you carry a mobile phone with you in case the trail gets too much to handle. There are multiple exit points on the greenway where you can be picked up by a family member/friend. As this is a day-long trail we also would ask you to wear suitable clothing (and bring a spare change)...it is the West of Ireland after all! Oh and don't forget the Vaseline!

Once you register for the Challenge you will receive your sponsorship card. Their is no minimum amount to collect on your card. All we ask is you do your best to raise as much as possible! For those of you who don’t believe you are able for the challenge, but would still like to get involved in raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mayo General Hospital, thats perfectly OK too! You can also register online and a card will be forwarded to you. All cards must be returned by April 30th 2012.

Finally please remember that this is a fun, enjoyable, scenic walk and NOT A RACE of any kind. There will be no prizes for whoever finishes first. The event is open to all persons over 16 years (or under 16 if accompanied by an adult/parent).

We look forward to seeing you there and wish you an enjoyable day! Register Now
